ICP DAS I-7520 Series is an isolated RS-232 to RS-422/485 converter that transparently extends legacy RS-232 serial connections to long-distance RS-485 or RS-422 networks without any hardware or software changes. Featuring 3,000 VDC galvanic isolation, automatic RS-485 direction control, ESD protection, and a transmission range of up to 1,200 m at 9.6 kbps, the I-7520 Series delivers reliable industrial-grade serial communication in a compact DIN-rail form factor.
ICP DAS I-7520 Series is a compact industrial-grade converter designed to transparently bridge RS-232 serial interfaces — found on most industrial computers, PLCs, and HMIs — with long-distance RS-422 or RS-485 networks. By converting RS-232 signals into differential RS-422 or RS-485 signals, the I-7520 Series overcomes the inherent limitations of RS-232: short transmission distance (max. 15 m), single-device connectivity, and susceptibility to electrical noise.
The series features 3,000 VDC galvanic isolation, protecting connected equipment from ground loops, power surges, and electrical noise — an essential safeguard in industrial environments with variable grounding conditions or high electromagnetic interference. Users can choose the isolation side based on which connected equipment carries greater value: I-7520 and I-7520A isolate the RS-232 side (protecting the host computer), while I-7520R and I-7520AR isolate the RS-485/RS-422 side (protecting field devices).
A built-in Self-Tuner ASIC automatically handles RS-485 direction control (transmit/receive switching), eliminating the need for RTS/CTS handshaking signals and enabling seamless "plug-and-play" RS-485 connectivity with standard RS-232 software drivers — no firmware or software modification required.
The I-7520A and I-7520AR models add RS-422 full-duplex support and a dual RS-485 channel option (Type 3 via jumper setting), enabling star topology RS-485 networks — expanding deployment flexibility for multi-drop or distributed control architectures. Transmission speeds are selectable from 300 to 115,200 bps with a maximum range of 1,200 m at 9.6 kbps or 400 m at 115.2 kbps (using Belden 9841 2P twisted-pair cable).
ESD protection on both RS-232 and RS-422/485 data lines safeguards the converter from electrostatic discharge events during installation and operation. With a wide input voltage range of +10 to +30 VDC and an operating temperature range of -25°C to +75°C, the I-7520 Series is suitable for diverse industrial field environments.
